If you are unfamiliar with the various treatment options for vomiting or diarrhoea then check out our self-help page. Remember to always discuss over-the-counter treatment with your local pharmacist so they can check if it is suitable for your condition and safe for you to take.
Diarrhoea or vomiting will usually clear up without treatment after a few days, particularly if it's caused by an infection. It is very important to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration (lack of water in the body).
The following treatments for vomiting or diarrhoea are available over the counter from your pharmacist
Oral rehydration salts
If you are particularly frail or elderly, you may benefit from oral rehydration salts which restore lost salts from diarrhoea and vomiting. Seek advice from your pharmacist to see if it is suitable to take these.

Anti-diarrhoeal - Loperamide
Loperamide can reduce the length of time you have diarrhoea. It works by slowing down the muscles in your bowel and therefore allows more water to be absorbed. It should not be used if you have abdominal pain, fever or passing blood.
Over-the-counter treatments listed on this page are available at your local pharmacy. Find your closest pharmacy below.
